The magnitude of the rainfall shows high temporal and spatial variation. Rainfall is the predominant form of precipitation and therefore, the term precipitation is used synonymously with rainfall. Drops of larger size break up into smaller drops as it falls down on the Earth’s surface. Rain is a form of precipitation that is in the form of water drops of a size that is larger than 0.5mm. When these ice crystals get large enough, they begin to tumble out of the cloud. Ice crystals are formed at the expense of supercooled water. Between water and ice crystals, a vapor pressure gradient is created. Second property- Over ice crystals, the saturation vapor pressure (es) is lower than over water. Encouraging the formation of all-ice clouds, a single ice crystal is added to a supercooled water droplet cloud. Hence, with an increase in temperature, some water droplets will turn into ice. But freezing nuclei are rare in the atmosphere. When an ice crystal collides with super-cooled water, it freezes the water. The clouds contain ice crystals and super-cooled water droplets.
